District resident Nola Ann Michelle Bens, 59, is behind bars in Frederick County after she was arrested in Alexandria in connection to a February assault and robbery that left a woman with "significant injuries."
According to police, on Wednesday, Feb. 21, officers were called to the area of South Carroll Street and Carroll Creek in Frederick to investigate a reported robbery involving two women.
The victim told investigators that she had parked her vehicle along the street and went to pay the parking meter when a second vehicle stopped nearby, driven by Bens, who got out and attempted to steal the woman's purse.
A struggle ensued, police say, when the victim was assaulted and threatened with a gun before Bens managed to steal her keys and fled the area.
Witnesses provided a description of Bens and her vehicle to officers, and surveillance video recovered during the investigation determined that Bens had followed the woman until she arrived on South Carroll Street.
Bens was identified as a suspect, and earlier this month she was arrested in Alexandria by the US Marshal’s Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force and extradited back to Maryland on Tuesday, where she was charged with:
- Armed robbery;
- Second-degree assault;
- Theft.
Bens is being held at the Frederick County Detention Center as of Friday, April 26.
